The EF announced on Tuesday, February 27 that the upgrade is now officially scheduled to activate on Ethereum mainnet on March 13, 2024. As discussed on last week’s ACD call, developers are testing the final versions of client software on a mainnet shadow fork, which is a type of testnet that mirrors the blockchain state and activity of Ethereum mainnet. Busa said developers have conducted different types of “spam tests” on the mainnet shadow fork. Nodes have remained extremely resilient through these tests and network participation rates have held steady at close to 100% participation. Though there were no issues, Busa noted that the spam tests did strain nodes heavily in terms of computer resources, specifically RAM and CPU overhead +| 182.2 | **Dencun Update** Busa then reminded everyone on the call that the Goerli test network (testnet) will soon be deprecated. Anyone using the test network should move over their operations to a different Ethereum testnet by April 17. Busa said that he had already noticed that a few large validator node operators on Goerli have already retired their machines. This caused delays to network finality on Goerli on February 28 but the Goerli network appears to have since recovered. Ryan noted that the network participation rate on Goerli is already quite low, hovering at roughly 70%. “I don’t expect [the participation rate] to last till the 17 of April to be honest,” said Busa. “It’s something interesting to watch nonetheless.” +| 182.3 | **Dencun Update** Busa asked when his team should expect to retire Devnet 12, a dedicated test network launched last November for client teams to test their Dencun upgrade implementations. Geth developer Gary Rong explained how EIP 7610 would not pose any issue to the Verkle upgrade in the future. Hedera Hashgraph engineer and Besu client maintainer Danno Ferrin expressed a few outstanding concerns about how EIP 7610 may impact Verkle that he said he would share in writing on the EIP 7610 Ethereum Magicians thread. +| 182.6 | **Retroactive EIPs for Pectra** The second retroactive EIP that developers discussed was EIP 7523, which would formalize the rule banning empty accounts from the state of Ethereum and Ethereum testnets. Ryan said that he would double check who was doing the analysis to ensure that no accounts on any Ethereum network, mainnet or testnet, would be impacted from this rule if implemented and resurface this discussion again on the next ACDE call. +| 182.7 | **Account Abstraction EIPs for Pectra** Discussed potential account abstraction EIPs for inclusion in Pectra. On February 28, a subset of developers gathered for a dedicated meeting on AA where they discussed the broad objectives for the initiative and the various EIPs that could be implemented in the short vs. long-term to achieve these goals. Speaking to the goals of AA, cofounder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin said, “So the longer term [goal is] this fundamental desire that eventually we have to have some kind of account system that is one, allows key rotations and [two], key deprecations, to allow us quantum resistance. Three, allows batching … [and] allows sponsor transactions and a couple of other smaller things and out of those of course, the first two goals are very clearly not satisfiable with EOAS and so presents a pretty clear case for moving the ecosystem to a place where it's beyond EOA centric, but then this brought the discussion to what are actually the means to get there and what are some of the specific details that are less resolved and what actually is a shorter term roadmap that gets us goals that people want in the short term, but is at the same time compatible with those longer term [goals]. +| 182.8 | **EIP 7623, increase calldata cost** he proposal recommends increasing the cost for regular transactions on Ethereum that primarily use the blockchain for data availability. By adjusting the gas cost for calldata on Ethereum, the EIP reduces the number of call data transactions that can feasibly fit into one block and thereby reduces the maximum size of blocks. A reduction in block size could allow for a higher number of blob transactions instead. Danny Ryan recommended that developers on the call review the EIP over the coming weeks. +| 182.9 | **EIP 2537, precompile for BLS12-381 curve operations** This proposal which introduces new cryptographic signature schemes to Ethereum has already been approved for inclusion in the Pectra upgrade. One of the authors of the proposal, Antonio Sanso, raised a question about its implementation. Danny Ryan recommended that the question be put down in writing and circulated to developers for further discussion outside of the call. +| 182.10 | **EIP 5920, PAY opcode** This proposal creates a new operation that would allow users to send ETH to an address without triggering any of the address’ functions. Geth developer Marius van der Wijden said that from further discussion about this EIP with other teams, the testing for the proposal is more complicated than expected. Van der Wijden also noted that the proposal is underspecified. Ferrin added that the PAY opcode is currently specified to use the same code number as a different opcode, the AUTH opcode, so that will need to be rectified by its authors. +| 182.11 | **EIP 7609, reduce transient storage pricing** This proposal recommends reducing the price of the transient storage opcodes for common use cases by smart contracts such as maintaining a reentrancy log. Van der Wijden and Ryan were in favor of first collecting data on how transient storage opcodes are used after the Dencun upgrade goes live and then resurfacing the discussion on its pricing. +| 182.12 | **EIP 7639, cease serving history before proof-of-stake** This proposal creates a timeline for EL clients to stop serving historical data from before the Merge upgrade. The motivation for this code change is to reduce the amount of data Ethereum nodes need to store in perpetuity. The proposal also commits to a standardized way for nodes to structure historical pre-Merge data and retrieve it from an external source. Teku developer Mikhail Kalinin noted that this EIP has a dependency on another EIP, EIP 6110, which was approved for inclusion in the Pectra upgrade on a prior ACD call. Developers agreed to review EIP 7639 over the next few weeks in more detail. +| 182.13 | **Engine API & JSON RPC Changes** Kalinin raised a few questions related to the implementation of the confirmation rule, which is a CL mechanism that confirms over the period of one slot, roughly 12 seconds, whether a block under certain assumptions will remain in the canonical chain and be finalized. This is a powerful feature as many applications built on Ethereum could utilize the information of early block confirmations in their operations. However, to expose the data about early block confirmations, there needs to be a few changes made to the Ethereum Engine API and JSON RPC. There would be no verkle issues. Did anyone look into that? And, Martin has this idea that, actually, we can. So whenever we switch to the verkle and during the transition, we can, whenever we encounter a account has zero nonce, empty runtime code and the empty storage, we can just discard the storage, which means we will not move the leftover storage from the merkle to verkle. And, in this way, after the transition, we can make sure that, in the extreme state, this kind of accounts will no longer exist. +* And we can then deprecate this APE. the idea is that, because for this storage, it is impossible to access them and also impossible to modify them because of the empty runtime code. So, it is totally safe to discard them. And, also, for this account, they all have non-zero balance, so they will still be kept in the state even after discarding the storage. It allows sponsored transactions. So I kind of think if we make if we consider 3074 for Prague and, if we have confidence, then it doesn't prevent us from the end game. I think, the other one that I feel like has been brought up less is basically that, like one thing that would be good to avoid is essentially creating two totally separate developer ecosystems for smart contract wallets and for EOS, and like 3074 bit bytes, like the auth opcode is in its current form, fairly EOF specific. And, like I, looked at it yesterday and it feels like there's a pretty, a pretty natural path to be eventually extending it to be a smart contract, focused as well. +* But then there's basically the long terme issue then, which is like 5 or 10 years from now, there is going to be a lot of applications that have this like extra entrenched workflow where things happen using the auth opcode. And are we, like, does it feel right to have that, to have that kind of, workflow just continue to exist and be part of the EVM in the long Right? Basically, yeah. A long there's a long stream of complexity concern. And for us at least, this is one of the big differentiating factors, between 3074 and 5806. although they both bring value. but I think so, kind of one of the main things that came up yesterday is how could we possibly align the roadmap between 3074 and 4337 We've been thinking about this today. We came up with some suggestions. I'm not sure they're by definition the solution, but it does feel like there could be like Vitalik mentioned, there could be good alignment between 3074 and 4337 if we make the effort to make this alignment. and so that makes me a lot more positive about this. + +**Danny** +* A couple more comments and then I want to give you all some time to talk. But basically this kind of forward compatibility with smart contract wallet was kind of the last thing we did think about and we basically were thinking back then that we could have invokers become the de facto standards for new features across smart contact wallets and, and, EOAS. So basically like, say, if there's a batching invoke right for batching multiple transactions, then that could also we can structure it in a way where that same invoker can also be used by smart contract wallet But that does mean +* I mean, Vitalik already kind of touched on it a little bit that we would have to be okay with the future, where for all of these features forever, we are fine with smart contract worlds having to make this extra call to the specific invoker that then does that for them or something. It seems not necessarily like a very natural flow like it. Basically it adds extra overhead forever to the smart contract world, and it's very opinionated on that side. But it does give us this kind of interoperability, and it does kind of keep keep us from fracturing these two paths. What are we actually trying to abstract sometimes in the, in some conversations it's not clear to everyone. So our definition is, we abstract all the aspects of the account, which means authentication, meaning proving who you are, proving your identity, to the account. Then we have a authorization, which is something that usually there is a separation in every security system except the blockchain. There is a separation between authentication, authorization, like who you are and what are you allowed to do. So in EOA this is implicit. If you have the if you prove that you are the owner, you can do anything. +* Otherwise you cannot do anything. So, it's so authorization, we have a replay protection. We want to enable parallel transactions when the order doesn't matter, for example. And we have in some multi-tenant use cases, there is a gas payment. Of course, we want to be able to pay with ERC 20. We want to do gas sponsorship. This is a very popular feature and execution abstraction, which is execution abstraction, which means allowing things like, like batching and, like batching delegation. +* That's, the kind of thing that 3074, for example does. So we want to abstract all of this problem is that this is a this is a hard problem because, we have to, I mean, doing a state, I think state dependent validation means that there are many ways to invalidate, to do mass invalidation and therefore to do denial of service attacks against the against the system. And the easiest way to solve it, of course, is by using a centralized relay. But that's not what we're here for. +* So instead we need to have a complex mempool protection, something that, that allows us to have, to have a permissionless mempool and, the first, the first meaningful work in this space was, 2938, which really paved the way to this line of thinking. And, we learned a lot. we learned a lot from it. But we also noticed that, we it hit a certain, dead end because some basic, basic account abstraction features are broken by requiring the, requiring the a prefix, which is really a must if you if you don't have this protection, then, block builders can be easily can be easily attacked by transactions that invalidate each other. +* And, the validation rules are also far more restrictive than in a more recent proposals, which actually preclude most of the, most of the use cases that we've already seen live in some 4337 accounts. So the goal of ELC 43 seven and, and later, RIP 7560 is to solve this problem. And it does so by separating validation execution. So that and since we have a separate validation stage, we can avoid many of the of the DDoS vectors without being too restrictive. +* So 4367 was never meant to be enshrined. It's an ELC. It's an it's meant to be a test, that it's an experimental a it allows us to experiment with without obstruction or different EVM chains, without having to reach consensus on how a count obstruction works. And the focus is decentralization. So there are no centralized, there are no centralized components, anywhere in the system. +* And of course, it has some it has some limitations because it's not a native it's less gas efficient. We have to waste some gas on some on overhead that could have been avoided with the native obstruction. It cannot it cannot migrate your existing eoas. It cannot add codes. So we need a separate EIP for that. And there are already a few good proposals and, one big issue since we really care about censorship resistance is that, it's harder to support with inclusion lists if the protocol is not aware of is not aware of this. is launched, actually, here at the Eth Denver. if Denver exactly one year ago. And since then, it's been getting, it's been getting a nice, some nice traction. last time I checked, there were 3 million deployed accounts, like 11 or 12, actually 12 million user ops. +* And we see, many great projects, many new wallets being built and many projects, that use it. So it's an interesting experiment to work on. +* What is the RIP-7560. This one is a bit, like a it's a it seems like a like like an odd animal because it's not meant for, I mean, we're not we are not, fully sure yet about how abstraction, how abstraction should work at the protocol level. +* And yet we went ahead and wrote it. So why did we do that? It turns out that some layer tools were not willing to wait and actually wanted to have native account abstraction, a native account abstraction already. For example, ZK had it from day one starting. It also did. And the problem is that each of these, they all took ERC 1457, but they created an enshrined version of it in different ways, which in which, first of all, caused a lot of wallet fragmentation. Suddenly you have wallets like Argent that only support one chain, and you cannot use the same wallet on any other, which is of course not a great UX for users. +* And in some cases it introduced attack vectors because we did spend a lot of time on a lot of time on preventing the service vectors. And not everyone is and not everyone identifies every such case. So the solution we came up with is to standardize, like to, to have a standard version that all layer tools can use. And then, wallets only have to be written once and can work anywhere. And we can, and we can help ensure that it's, secure. So in short, it's something that's going to happen with or without us. So we might as well, help them get it right now. It's going to be it's going to be ELC 457 compatible. So on chains that they choose not to implement this EIP or on mainnet. +* It's you can use the same account. You'll be able to switch,To deploy the same account on a different networks. So if we ignore it and we only focus on these two, then we right now we have this, we have these options. +* We're discussing the 3074 route and the, and the 5806. So I'm trying to look at them and I see, I mean, what do they give us and what risks do we take? And so as I so as I said, the most common case is batching. And with batching is with batching, both of them can support batching. +* Although I think that the latter, the latter is more is a more natural way to support batching because the 3074, if you have a batching invoker, the transaction actually has to contain two signatures. +* You have a signature for the EOF transaction and, and the signature for the auth. And of course and then there's the and also the commit that is a part of the transaction. So the transaction becomes bigger which may be a cost issue on the on wallet. But more importantly who is going to sign these two transaction, these two signatures. +* It's not reasonable to ask the user to sign the batch twice in order to submit it. So it's more likely that it will be used with a relay. So like a centralized relay is going to sign the transaction and it has to be centralized because otherwise there are a easy ways to grief it. So it will have to be permissioned in some way. And then the relay submits the transaction that submits the batch on your behalf. With a 5806. It works. It works naturally. It's just that you just delegate this. I see this is a way to run a script in your account, so the user just signs the signs, the normal transaction only once, and it runs a script that does the batching. That sponsorship is something that 3074 can do natively. And if you spend basically enough, gas on EVM operations then the call data cost will be yeah, it will remain at 16 gas per call data byte. I just posted a link into the chat so you can see a lot of more details, some analysis which accounts are affected, but basically, normal regular users wouldn't be affected at all, so they would just continue paying 16 gas per call data byte while the data availability users would pay 68 gas per call data byte. And I did some quick analysis for, the last 12 days. And it looks like that around 96% of the transactions would have remained unaffected, which means only 4% of them would have paid the 68, gas call data, and most of them are data availability or users writing comments in their call data. And those 4% that will be affected. +* It's basically 1% of the users, and the large chunk of them is using call data for data availability. + +**Danny** +* Are there any clever ways to try to get around this, threshold, like batching across multiple transactions or just the 21,000 hit break, break such strategies? So basically we price compute for the worst case block processing times. +* If you only use compute operations and we price data for if you only have a block that's full of data and we price storage for if you only access storage like multiple times in a row. Right. And the beautiful thing here is that basically now it it still has this high price for, for that bad case, for the attack case basically. But it gives you lower prices if you actually have a much more realistic mixed usage block. And this is actually a mechanism we might be look, look into applying even for other types of resource mixes as well. Basically, it's a way of kind of elegantly, making, making the total kind of resource usage in a more efficient.
