Translator's context for 4.0 (originally 3.4) #1028
Comments
Sent announcement via transifex

@tuomas2 Perhaps you could again add a check-list in the OP like this: #712 (comment) |
I re-ordered the list in OP so the first rows (up to India) are the languages with most installs according to Play Store. It is possible there are more languages with a high priority that I don't know the country off the top of my head. Also, languages like Chinese and Spanish, and probably some more, are likely used from many countries. |

Build 524 is now going to Play beta channel. It contains new translations from transifex that I pulled yesterday. It contains some new features that are not yet translatable (strings are to be checked still). |

We are freezing (english, translatable) source strings for 3.4 soon so that translators can finalize the translation work. Will send announcement via transifex and also here in few days! |
Planning to freeze english source strings on thursday 1st July. |
Sent via Transifex to translators
|
Thanks for letting me know. Perhaps this is a mistake we should change in source text, but as a workaround, you could |
Got second complaint about same issue, so fixed this in source strings. |
Thanks for the info @davidhrbac! |
@tuomas2 I'm checkind 4.0 and thinking about 'Study Pads' vs 'My Notes'. Are 'Study Pads' 'My Notes' on stereoids? TBH there is no good translation for 'Study Pads' in Hungarian... it all sounds artificial in the context. |
@krisek I'll let Tuomas answer also, but for Spanish it's pizarra de estudio, which is a bit more like slate, board, or clipboard for studying. In case that gives any idea that would help |
I understand Study Pads as TOPIC (label) notes and My Notes as CHAPTER
notes.
There is much overlap though - Study Pad notes in a specific chapter will
all show up in the My Notes view.

So maybe I completely oversee but I don't find anywhere 'My Notes', I see only 'Study Pads'. I keep searching 🙂 |
Ok, I found it, it is merged with Bookmarks (my screen was too narrow) |

We are in progress of creating tutorials (@agrogers). I think overlapping of these concepts is coming naturally and is unavoidable. We have done several iterations of UX improvements based on feedback now, but it is indeed possible we will keep improving after 4.0 is released (towards 4.1).
Yes, they are 'virtual documents', kind of user-provided documents.
Just ping me on this thread whenever you want a new build. I'm able to do it at least once a day if needed.
Do you mean BibleNames resource? https://www.transifex.com/mjdenham/andbible/biblenames/
They should not contain obsolete strings, but they do include some strings for some simple(ish) features that are planned to be implemented soonish after 4.0 is released.
Please list those strings that are unclear and I will add context instruction to them. I'm feeling that there are probably also a lot of obvious strings that do not need context.
I can. Should I make you language coordinator? Theres currently Martin Zibricky. Do you know him?
Please specify if there's something I can do about this. |
@davidhrbac changed you to coordinator role in Czech language. |
Yes, that's my point - feature_after_4 Tasks
Ping is coming right now. Anyway, a new build everyday till the 4.0 release would help everyone...
No, there are names of Bible books. I'm looking for the source of Bible release names. I can see English names on Czech Bibles within the documents and right topbar.
feature_after_4
Since translators do not know the whole application it is not so easy to find the string in app without knowing the context. E.g. 'Hidden shortcuts'. Have no clue where it is, so I'm not able to translate within context.
It may help, would be good to get rid of those 'unrewied' ones. No, I do not know him, seems to me he's not involved in the project any more.
Czech example:
English:
feature_after_4 |
Only 2 new strings translated since last build (which I did yesterday). Will trigger new build in a minute. |
Those are coming from the modules themselves. For example, B21 has "Czech Bible, Preklad 21...". "Czech Bible" there is coming from Description field of module configuration. Therefore, module conf files should be fixed to make them translated properly. You can file a ticket to https://tracker.crosswire.org/secure/Dashboard.jspa about that. |
We wanted to add translatable strings now to allow inclusion of those features without heavy translation cycle and waiting for various translators. |
Context tells already that the item is keyed with name "help_hidden_features_title". Added another context hint "Main menu > Help & Tips > Hidden shortcuts". |
In which contexts plurals are not handled properly and require change? You can also open new bug tickets for those items when you find such items. |
thanks for the feedback, I think yesterday night I found the right solution. Interestingly there is no word in Hungarian for Whiteboard / or Idea collecting pin board -- or any of them is very much related to the physicalities so don't apply here. Finally (? 🙂 ) I use the word 'Jegyzetlap', which is basically a sheet of paper where you can make notes - not only one note, i.e not a post-it or a little piece of paper, so it is a proper sheet of paper. A study is something more serious than to be done on a handheld device ... maybe later on some sort of desktop synchronization would be useful for Study Pads, not as if I'd be aware of any open format that would suit (maybe a simple markdown?). |
#154 is a feature request for that. Proper 2-way sync would require more than markdown because of the links to Scripture references and bookmarks/labels that are integrated with the study pads |
I still see no new translations in the beta build. Google Play keeps me on 0ea566b build... |
Google Play Beta channel is not getting all new builds. Google Play would have anyway more delay (sometimes hours, sometimes even days) because Google reviews each update manually. New automated builds appear here: https://github.com/AndBible/and-bible/releases (you will be notified of new builds via email if you "watch" the repository). |
Beta channel I am updating normally approximately once a week only. |
I want a few Czech people to test beta version to get feedback. They will not install APK outside the Play. |
I will released new beta today |
Pushed new version to beta channel (it's in review now). |

Is there a public list of translations for Android-"standard" terms? For example, my stock Android 11, in Dutch, always has "modus" where the original Android screens must have "mode". I'd think Google documented that somewhere-- but I haven't found it yet. And what is preferred when the original never uses a word ("applicatie" or "toepassing" is never used in stock Android, it is always "app")? Just act as if the English And Bible screen says "app" instead of "application"? I haven't found a way to update the Transifex word list yet, but I'm assuming that there is where I document such idiom decisions? For now I'm assuming that any translation is better than none. (Oh, and I'll be doing nl_nl as opposed to nl_be (Belgium). Mijn verontschuldigingen, Vlaamse vrienden! 🙂) |
I'm not aware of that. Please let us know here if you find one :-) |
