This plugin uses the proprietary Hangouts protocol, instead of the XMPP bridge that Google provides for legacy clients to connect to its network. The differences between using these two options in Pidgin are listed below
Feature | Hangouts | XMPP |
---|---|---|

Hangouts Group chats | ✓ | |
XMPP group chats | ✓ | |
Rich text formatting | ✓ | |
Non-gmail contacts | ✓ | |

Mail notifications | ✓ | |
OAuth Authentication | ✓ | ✓* |

*OAuth is an optional login mechanism, which Pidgin does not support
