There is already a tool to do this with vertex groups, but smoothing could be done better given our knowledge of the use case (i.e. ambient occlusion.) Smoothing could/should use many tricks for improved smoothing quality, such as:
Wide-open areas with similar normals can be smoothed more strongly
Small crevices can preserve their lighting
