@RussTreadon-NOAA reported that the earc00 job occasionally fails on its first submission (as seen in the EMC v16rt2n parallel). Email from Russ with details on issue and potential solutions is below.

Will investigate a better dependency solution for earc00 job.

The v16rt2n gdasearc0 job occasionally fails on the first submission as shown below
-rw-r--r-- 1 emc.gloparadev g01 377303 Jan 6 07:35 2021010600/gdasearc00.log.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 emc.gloparadev g01 377115 Jan 7 07:35 2021010700/gdasearc00.log.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 emc.gloparadev g01 376735 Jan 8 01:37 2021010718/gdasearc00.log.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 emc.gloparadev g01 376730 Jan 8 07:35 2021010800/gdasearc00.log.0

v16rt2n.xml has two file dependencies for gdaselnk

<datadep><cyclestr>&ROTDIR_NCO;/gdas.@Y@m@d/@H/atmos/gdas.t@Hz.atmf009.ensres.nc</cyclestr></datadep>
<datadep><cyclestr>&ROTDIR_NCO;/enkfgdas.@Y@m@d/@H/atmos/gdas.t@Hz.atmf009.ensspread.nc</cyclestr></datadep>

Using 2021010800 as the example the gdasearc00.log.0 the job failed because gdas.t00z.atmf009.ensmean.nc changed size while creating the HPSS tarball. The gdasearc00.log.0 job began at 07:30:07. NCO's gdas_enkf_post_f009_00.o48973995 ended at 07:30:27.

The gdas_enkf_post_fXXX jobs are submitted concurrently. There's no guarantee which job will finish first. You could change the gdaselnk dependency to a different enkfgdas file. A quick check of $COMROOTp3/gfs/para/enkfgdas.$PDY/$cyc/atmos does not show a file we can consistently rely upon as being the last file created. Furthermore, the v16rtn gdaselnk file dependency only checks for the presence of the file, not that the file has been completely written to disk.

rocoto includes options to include minimum size and time (age) along with file dependencies. For example, we could add a 6 minute wait on gdas.t*z.atmf009.ensspread.nc via

<datadep age="00:00:06:00"><cyclestr>&ROTDIR_NCO;/enkfgdas.@Y@m@d/@H/atmos/gdas.t@Hz.atmf009.ensspread.nc</cyclestr></datadep>

A minsize dependency could be used instead of age.

Addition of the age dependency was tested in the v16rt2c. With this change no gdasearc00 jobs failed due to target files changing size.

Upon further investigation and discussion between @JianKuang-UMD and @RussTreadon-NOAA this appears to be an issue only in a specialized workflow/experiment setup (v16rt2n). This failure is not occurring in the develop branch since the earc jobs wait for the epos jobs (epmn) to complete. Closing issue.
