How to change the translation of the Overview for Chrome Web Store and tampermonkey.net #211
Comments
It is not only the Simplified Chinese translation of the overview for Chrome Web Store but also the Traditional Chinese. And tampermonkey.net too! To be frank, This has misled so many Chinese users. I have met so many Chinese users who consider Tampermonkey to be “油猴”.
Please correct it! |
Thank you for your ongoing feedback and support. :-) I recently wrote the Tampermonkey web site architecture from scratch, which allows me to add its translation files to this repository. I'll do it as soon as I can. I'll also add text files for the Chrome Web Store and Firefox AddOns. It'll also be possible to write the translation files in YAML format in case this makes things easier for you.
In my opinion, the use of the term "油猴" as the translation for Tampermonkey is acceptable, despite not being an exact translation. Tampermonkey is a brand name and typically isn't translated. However, since Chinese uses its own characters, it's understandable that a translation would be made. I believe that many users are familiar with Tampermonkey as "油猴". As a result, I've used this name as well. While Greasemonkey today has round about 220,000 users and is only available for Firefox, Tampermonkey has over 10 million Chrome users and over 6 million Microsoft Edge users. This makes me believe that using a different name, such as "油猴", would lead many users to search for a software that doesn't exist for their browser. It's worth mentioning that "油" also is translated as "oil" and many users search for "Oil Monkey," which doesn't refer to either Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey. However, many of these searches still lead to the Tampermonkey homepage. |
There are some misleading words in the Simplified Chinese translation of the overview for Chrome Web Store.
BTW, is it possible to use an online translation management system like Crowdin? It would be quite convenient for some translators who are not familiar with coding.
It is convenient for the developer to manage several translations (e.g. strings of Tampermonkey, Overview of Chrome Web Store, strings of tampermonkey.net) meanwhile.
