We would like to propose the following terms please. Definitions and terms have been taken in the same format from similar existing standard names.

- Term mass_concentration_of_pm10_chloride_dry_aerosol_particles_in_air
- Description Mass concentration means mass per unit volume and is used in the construction mass_concentration_of_X_in_Y, where X is a material constituent of Y. A chemical species denoted by X may be described by a single term such as "nitrogen" or a phrase such as "nox_expressed_as_nitrogen". "Aerosol" means the system of suspended liquid or solid particles in air (except cloud droplets) and their carrier gas, the air itself. Aerosol particles take up ambient water (a process known as hygroscopic growth) depending on the relative humidity and the composition of the particles. "Dry aerosol particles" means aerosol particles without any water uptake. “Pm10 aerosol” means atmospheric particulate compounds with an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to 10 micrometers. The chemical formula for the chloride anion is Cl-.

We have an unresolved issue with respect to standard names of the form mass_concentration_of_X_dry_aerosol_particles_in_air. Based on the current interpretation of this standard name, it describes "mass concentation of all aerosol particles that contain X" (see mailing list post from 22nd June 2017, link further below). But, probably, a name for "mass concentration of particulate bound X in air" is intended. It wasn't decided on a proper standard name structure for the latter.

There were some new standard names, which have the first structure but the second meaning, accecpted for CMIP6. This was done because these names were urgently needed. I didn't find the post in the archive of the mailing list.

I would be happy if we could settle this because there are some standard names pending. I could summarize the past discussion and write a new proposal next week.

Thanks @neumannd for the history on this and your proposal. I'd be keen to hear more so we can make sure we use standard names in the datasets we are publishing that meet the requirements, in case we need to make any changes.

Hello @jen-thomas,

My name's Ellie and I am now working on the CF info support & management team. Following the migration of standard name proposals from the cf-convention/discuss repo to the cf-convention/vocabularies repo, I am following up on some long-standing open issues. These names have been under discussion since the issue was created back in 2020, and as they appear to conform to the construction guidelines for CF standard names, are consistent with existing names, and have associated units and descriptions, I am suggesting that these be accepted after a further 7 day period with no comments or feedback to the contrary.

The only adjustment I would suggest is that in the description for your last name, mass_concentration_of_pm10_ammonium_dry_aerosol_particles_in_air, the chemical formula for ammonium should have a positive sign (NH4+) if it is referring to the cation.

As the 7 day period has now passed, these names have now been accepted (with the description of the name mass_concentration_of_pm10_ammonium_dry_aerosol_particles_in_air having the positive sign in its chemical formula as mentioned above). These will be published in the upcoming release of v86 of the standard names table, which will be in the second half of this month (August). Thank you again for your proposal!
