The Semantic Scholar API lets you query papers by various identifiers (DOI, PMID...) and allows to easily ingest cited items data:

https://api.semanticscholar.org/graph/v1#operation/get_graph_get_paper_references

Also looks like a nice data source.

Like you mentioned in #168 - some sort of middle layer managing all the possible identifiers / citation data sources could be handy now that there seem to be many options. Will discuss more there

Semantic Scholar would be so great.. >80% of my papers can't be found currently using wikidata's database, but they are available at Semantic Scholar :(
