Even though the identifying fields for hosts, containers and pods can be changed from the default to a custom value, the field used to label the nodes is statically defined for each node type.

An example for a scenario where a custom field would make sense would be in cloud infrastructures where host names are assigned randomly, but other metadata would be available, which are more suitable to identify the hosts.

The configuration could take place via the configuration UI or the kibana.yml file.

Hi All,

Just adding a specific use case to this. AWS is our cloud provider and we do very little with the hostname, everything is done by instance identifier. So at the moment with this UI, we can click into a host experiencing problems, then we have to copy the hostname and filter one of our other indices to get the instance identifier. This can then be used in our downstream processes (such as powershell scripts, etc). So would be really nice if it was configurable what property on the document appeared:

  • on mouseover of the hosts UI
  • click single host -> sub menu choose 'View metrics' ->the title of the single host UI

Thanks

This will be easier to address once we finish #39280 and the work we're doing to enable cloud metrics a bit more natively.

I'm closing this issue because we are moving away from allowing the customer to configure setting via the UI. The ID fields were deprecated in 7.6 and being removed for 8.0.
