Performance

Re-build time can be improved using sccache: https://github.com/mozilla/sccache

Measurement on M1 with Spooky example:

• no caching: 20 seconds
• using local backend in directory: 7 seconds
• using Redis backend on local network server: 13 seconds
• using Memcached on local network server: no significant improvement

Steps:

Rust Toolchain 1.64.0.0

• preparation of 1.64.0.0 release
• decision: build custom LLVM 15 for Rust purpose
  • official Espressif's LLVM 15 package does not contain important change yet, the package has also changes in the content of distribution artifact, because it will contain support for all Espressif's targets in one package - increased size

• esp-rs/esp-idf-sys@527f7fc which will prevent bugs like error: components/driver/include/driver/i2s_types.h: No such file or directory esp-idf-template#54 in the future (if there are master patches again).
  • It is also currently the case that patches get applied to esp-idf repos of activated esp-idf environments (because is_managed_espidf is set to true).
• Compiling v5.0 across drives on Windows works again since espressif merged espressif/mbedtls@7b428b1 into their mbedtls fork.
  • The upstream pull request is still pending.

@bjoernQ Please, could you elaborate about reasons behind using 1.62 toolchain instead of 1.63 for esp-wifi. This might be valuable also for other projects, because 1.63 seems to have some issues which are not present in 1.62.

Yes 1.63.0.x - especially 1.63.0.2 has issues which should be fixed with the next build (I think @MabezDev can explain things in more detail). I locally built a 1.63.0.3 but that one didn't include the LLVM fix so it's not really valid

In general 1.63.0.0 works fine for me (as 1.62 did). We should talk about that during the meeting - especially Scott's insights will be valuable
