The ingame menu just offers a "NULL" sound provider.

This is how the game starts for me on Ubuntu 14.10 64bit:

try installing "libopenal1" or most likely the 32bit version of it i.e. "libopenal1:i386", although I somehow remember fr1tz saying that it was included now.
Btw: you are definitely not starting with the "-OpenGLCompat" parameter as it is requesting the ogl 3.2 core profile.

Awesome!
After installing libopenal1:i386 i got a second device in the audio menu. When selected TOL has sound again.

Btw, I can't observe any difference between running TOL with or without -OpenGLCompat.

I experience a strange behaviour where i miss sound the first time i run the game.
After a second start of it i miss it, too but can choose my sound card for audio output (was not available before).
