I have been doing same having IO work on the first etcd server which makes it unresponsive.
This should be Ok since I have two other control-plane nodes.
But the ApiServer crashes in all other servers.
This seems to be related to an issue with ETCD, when certificated are not generated correctly, the explaination in this comment seems pretty logical to me and matches the behavior I see.

I am using kubespray 2.18 on a new cluster by the way.
