root@ubuntu:~# cansniffer can0

I can't seem to sniff the data on it. I'm using vmware fusion for my Ubuntu btw.

have you tried the using native linux installation without vmware?
also, what about using https://github.com/linklayer/cantact-app on windows?
cantact-app is a Java program, try to run it with Java on Windows.
