Is there something we can include in the commit message so that it ignores the deploy times?

Not today no.
It looks like it might be possible with COMMIT_REF (https://docs.netlify.com/configure-builds/environment-variables/#git-metadata), although it will need to run Git commands somehow to get the commit message.
