It has been used 96,601 times and is rendered on the standard map:

Note that translating/describing it is quite hard - it is often misused (up to and including "any greenery" or "strip of grass between carriageways").

I think it would be hard to explain in the preset's name good enough for what it should be used. When adding a preset for it, I would not know how to make sure that the misuse of this tag wouldn't increase. Of course a preset is not claimable for it, but maybe it will "push" this tag again. I believe many of the actual usages would even more fit into just landuse=grass and not the original meaning of "village_green".

I'm also hesitant to support this tag worldwide, despite its large usage. iD mappers already have to distinguish between Common, Park, Recreation Ground, Grass, Grassland, Sport Pitch, Garden, and various other similar presets. A Village Green may be a well-defined thing to some people, but I'm not sure it translates easily across cultures and to all of iD's languages.
