CMS does not properly escape special characters

If I write some markdown <\3 and then convert it to rich text, and back, I lose the escaped special character (<3).

Is this an issue if you only write in markdown mode?

No, but in order to upload images to the CMS, you have to enter rich text mode. Once they are uploaded you can then switch back to markdown mode to reference them.
