This is on top of #72 and replaces it. I pulled it down to see if I could find a simpler way that kept the overloads and one less weird generic-as-assignment thing, but I couldn't, I think @papb figured out the right way to fix this issue! I noticed one missing piece and added more type tests for it as well.
