uCore "server focused" image available for testing!

Fedora immutable desktops are possible because of the groundwork already done in Fedora CoreOS, a server OS designed for running container services.

uBlue desktops are great because they take stock Silverblue, Kinoite, etc, and make them a smoother experience, with painless, simple automatic upgrades. But what if someone wants an experience like this on their server?

Enter uCore, a "batteries included" build of CoreOS in the spirit of uBlue desktops.

Currently this project builds a ucore image; it adds a few packages to make CoreOS more feature rich out of the box, plus configures staged upgrades just like uBlue desktops.

There are plans to add more variety including:

• libvirtd - for KVM hypervisor
• zfs - for ZFS storage
• nvidia - for servers with NVidia (will include drivers and container runtime similar to ublue-os/nvidia )

Possible further additions include pre-defined podman quadlets for a set of easy to enable commonly used, home server/home lab services.

hello @bsherman I really like this idea of CoreOS as a ublue image 👏 I notice you have an HCI image maked as testing with ZFS support included. Is there away I can help get the image considered stable?

Hey! Thanks for stopping by! There's a couple topics in your message:

1. how to help the image be considered stable? Primarily, it just needs more people to use it and report any concerns/quirks/bugs so we can fix them.

I'm personally running this on one physical machine and several VMs, 8 or 9 machines total. 5 of them are at work, so I trust it, as it's just a tweaked CoreOS. The gotchas are mostly around default configuration, or unexpected missing files which I've occasionally seen arise when installing rpms on ostree which depend on alternatives.

2. ZFS and libvirt I've already got working in personal repos and builds, I simply need to get the build workflows migrated over to the public/shared repo. The past week has been a bit busy and I haven't been able to complete that yet.

3. nvidia - I haven't started on this yet, but there's great work done already in ublue-os/nvidia which we'll be able to use as a starting point. I want to get ZFS/libvirt working first, though.

How's that for an answer? If you have problems file an issue or even better, a PR with a fix! :-)

I have a bare-metal box running CoreOS and I have rebased on your HCI image.. I can confirm it came back up with all services running but this is as far as I got.
I plan to convert an mdm raid 1 to zfs pool and will report any problems I run into.
The box currently has a old AMD GPU in it.. but I also have an old Nvidia GPU, so could test some stuff out if needed.
If you would like you can assign me some tasks to get the build process moved to ublue repo and I will try to help where/if I can.. althou I am in no way associated to them and have no commit rights or anything
