Graphic medicine is the use of comics to tell personal stories of illness and health.

\n\n

The illustration and text in comics create an emotional impact while also making personal stories and clinical data (when used) approachable.

\n\n

This traveling banner exhibition by the National Library of Medicine explores an emerging genre of medical literature that combines the art of comics and personal illness narratives. Patients, healthcare providers and their loved ones have told stories about illness from their perspective using many creative mediums. The author’s viewpoint balances the external, clinical realities of medical symptoms and diagnoses. Additionally, graphic medicine can be a source of comfort for patients who share similar health issues, and offer another avenue for sharing information.

\n\n

Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived and Well-Drawn! is a FREE self-guided exhibit.

\n\n

The exhibition is on display from February 3 - March 13, 2025. A valid UCSF ID badge is required to enter the Kalmanovitz Library.

This workshop will teach attendees the conceptual and technical skills required to operate basic spreadsheet tools. Using Microsoft Excel, a commonly used tabular data program which shares functionality similar to other platforms like Google Sheets and Airtable, this workshop will go over basic formulas and their uses in research organization and analysis, with specific interest in how they can be applied for humanistic scholars.

\n\n

\n\n

This workshop is designed for beginners, who want to learn more about Microsoft Excel’s functions, and those who wish to learn how to better use tabular data tools for their research. It is also built around the needs of humanists, who sometimes are not trained in computational and digital methods. Students, faculty, and staff are all welcome to attend.

\n\n

\n\n

Attendees will need to be able to open Microsoft Excel on their computers, either using a desktop application or web version provided with Microsoft 365.

About the series

\n\n

This is the sixth of a seven-part workshop series, A Slower Introduction to R. The series is designed for UCSF researchers who intend to begin using R in their research. The series is intended to be a (relatively) slow-paced introduction to R. It does not assume any prior exposure to R or computer programming. The series has been designed to help learners approach common data-related tasks, and will draw on data examples from the health sciences (including public health and medicine).

\n\n

Each session (scheduled for 1.5 hours, but we may finish earlier on occasion) will involve short mini lectures, interspersed with hands-on exercises.

\n\n

Registration for each session requires UCSF MyAccess credentials.

\n\n

We plan to host intermediate-level workshops on R in Spring 2025 (dates and details pending).

\n\n

About the session

\n\n

Each session is titled in the form of a "How can I..." question. This second session is titled "How can I assign missing values or define dates?" and will cover:

\n\n\n\n

Participants are strongly encouraged to attend the prior session or familiarze themselves with that session's content (slides and exercises).

\n\n

About the instructor

\n\n

The instructor, Yea-Hung Chen, PhD, MS, has 10 years of experience teaching R to the UCSF community. He designed and taught UCSF's first-ever R course (Biostat 213) and taught the introductory biostatistics course for UCSF's MS in Global Health program (GHS 207).

\n\n

Accessibility statement

\n\n

Slides will be available on the Course Learning Environment at least 24 hours prior to each session. Learners are welcome to use recording or closed-captioning features embedded in the Zoom platform. To request reasonable accommodation for this session, please email the instructor (yea-hung.chen@ucsf.edu) as soon as possible.

This session will introduce attendees to the basics of digital health humanities methods by modelling computational approaches to research without the use of computers. In this hands-on session, participants will learn about important digital methods like GIS mapping, network analysis, and text analysis by engaging with prepared archival data. Rather than throwing these students into a class on how to use a digital tool like ArcGIS or Gephi, this workshop will first teach how digital humanists approach their research objects, and how their questions are based out of a humanist tradition.

\n\n

\n\n

Participants will learn:

\n\n

The basics of a number of digital methods. How research questions can emerge from primary materials. How digital methods inform humanistic research questions, and how these questions critique those digital tools.

About the series

\n\n

This is the final workshop of a seven-part series, A Slower Introduction to R.

This second session is titled "How can I create new categorical variables?" and will cover:

Join the BAOSG in March to learn about successful use cases for the OSF (Open Science Framework) platform. Professor Mariam Aly and Professor Don Moore, both from UC Berkeley, will join us to share their experiences using the platform to support and extend their open, transparent research practices.
\n\n

\n\n
Mariam Aly is an Acting Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at UC Berkeley. Her lab studies how memory systems contribute to attention, perception, and prediction. Mariam is passionate about making academia more equitable and inclusive by increasing transparency, accountability, and fairness.
\n\n

\n\n
Don Moore holds the Lorraine Tyson Mitchell Chair in Leadership at the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. His research interests include overconfidence, including when people think they are better than they actually are, when people think they are better than others, and when they are too sure they know the truth. He is only occasionally overconfident.
\n\n

\n\n
The Bay Area Open Science Group is intended to bring together students, faculty, and staff from the Stanford, UCSF, and Berkeley community to learn about open science, discuss the application of open science practices in a research context, and meet other members of the community who are interested in (or already are) incorporating open science practices into their work. Learn more about the group and connect with us on our website.

Workshop Series: Data and Document Analysis with Python, SQL, and AI

\n\n

This series is designed for researchers, staff, and students who want to learn Python from the ground up, focusing on data analysis, document analysis, and AI-based research. Throughout the workshops, we’ll dive into various data types—including numerical data, health data, text, and images/videos—and explore analysis techniques like regression, classification, and sentiment analysis. We’ll put a particular focus on text analysis, especially analyzing documents from our industry document library.

\n\n

As programming evolves, so does the way we learn it. While we’ll introduce AI-assisted programming earlier in the series than in past workshop series, we’ll still start with the basics. The early workshops (Intro to Python Parts 1 & 2 and Intro to SQL) will use AI sparingly. As the series moves forward, we’ll dive into topics like web APIs, text analysis, natural language processing, machine learning, regression, document analysis, and AI system interaction, with more AI-driven techniques along the way.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to use pre-trained open source tools for document classification and sentiment analysis. Rather than building custom models from scratch, you'll explore how to apply existing models using libraries like Hugging Face's Transformers and SpaCy. You’ll gain experience in working with these tools to process text data and perform classification or sentiment analysis with minimal setup. This session will show you how to effectively apply pre-trained models for text analysis tasks.

\n\n

Note: This workshop will be offered in person at the UCSF Famri Library at Mission Bay and online through UCSF Zoom. You will recieve an email from libcal with room information and Zoom link prior to the start of the workshop.

This second session is titled "How can I create new categorical variables?" and will cover:
