Hybrisa Prospera is a major colonial city on the planet LV-759. The city itself boasts a population into the tens of thousands, let alone thousands more in smaller outlying colonial outposts, the city was initially established due to the presence of large amounts of highly sought after mineral deposits. The sheer size and scale of the deposits, plus the planetary systems general proximity to interstellar trade and transport hubs, helped propel the burgeoning colony from a backwater into a major economic hub of human activity. Ostensibly the planetary system, much like the rest of the Neroid Sector, falls within territory claimed by the Three World Empire, however due to Weyland-Yutani being the principle benefactor involved in the initial establishment of the colony and its subsequent terraforming efforts, the colony was able to maintain a somewhat independent status, functioning as a crossroads of many of the major and minor interstellar powers. Today, the colony appears closer to a major city on Earth than a remote colony on the fringes of known space, with much of the amenities of life one would not expect to see in such a far flung locale. The city hosts its own dedicated policing force, often recruiting retiring or adventure seeking personnel from both the CMB and inner system based policing departments, it also features one of the most advance medical complexes in the Neroid system, with its operators proudly stating they can dispatch a emergency services craft to any area on the planet in less than two hours, and with colonists across the Neroid sector traveling to the planet to receive treatment. The city also features a well furnished spaceport almost indistinguishable in services, size and efficiency to any inner systems planet, serving as a logistical hub allowing dozens of far smaller colonies and outposts to exist across the planet and local planetary system as they conduct their own mineralogical studies and mining operations. The city even hosted a small brigade of planetary defense forces in the form of a detachment of the Three World Empire’s Imperial Armed Space Forces, in the style of the Hybsia Colonial Defence Forces. Small, but by the standard of the outer colonies, extremely well equipped and trained, even boasting an aerial assault squadron. It is projected that in less than one century, the planet will eventually become the single most populated world in the outer colonies, as even military planners from the major spacefaring powers have begun to factor the colonies' strategic importance into greater strategic planning. ----- Contrary to its reputation, Weyland-Yutani initially had altruistic goals and benign economic interests in the funding of the colony, and overall maintained only a minor presence within the city. Until the discovery. Several years prior, a mining expedition a short distance to the south of the colony discovered something that had only ever been found once before over 60 years ago. A xenoform spacecraft. Almost immediately upon this discovery, Weyland-Yutani swooped in with extreme fervor and intensity. Almost overnight a major research and security detachment arrived and quickly established an initially basic research base within the mines, quickly crafted to allow exploration and further excavation of the xenocraft whilst also minimizing knowledge of the craft's existence. Exploiting whatever it cost, Weyland-Yutani attempted to exert influence over the local city council and policing services whilst also beginning to slowly entrench its own personnel into the ranks of the local ruling elite. Soon, the corporation was able to secure permanent access rights to the xenocraft as Weyland-Yutani’s goons slowly entrenched themselves across the seedy and dark backstreets of the colony. As money, bribes and influence started to stake its insidious hold over the city, newer and more permanent structures began to be erected within and without the city and the underground caverns hosting the xenocraft. Soon after, a large-scale detachment of far more militarized Private Military Company personnel took station within the city. The miners who made this discovery found themselves pushed aside and forced into silence, first by corporate liaisons, lawyers, then eventually those who remained restless would find themselves visited by enshrouded thugs and goons in the cold and dark places of the colony. The arrival of the armed and cold Mercenaries of the Whiteguard PMC soon placed further pressure on those who would have stood up for themselves. Some of these disenfranchised miners would begin to turn towards a more extreme political ideology as they found their attempts at a peaceful settlement frustrated and made impossible by the dominating corporate controlled security forces and the increasingly corporate loyal and handpicked colonial administrative apparatus. Whilst the influence of the Colonial Liberation Front was still minimal on the colony, its insidious seeds were being well planted within the populace prior to the “incident” as discontent rose. The final tipping point that would seemingly risk permanently robbing the colony of its independence was the removal of the planetary defense forces, the Hybsia Colonial Defence Forces. Seen by the corporation as a threat to their operations within the city, years of pressure, both back on Earth and on the colony, plus copious amounts of bribes and subtle threats of rescinding corporate deals, finally bore fruit and convinced the power’s that be to withdraw the defense forces. The Whiteguard PMC forces began to assert themselves in taking over the defense forces functions as the Empire began their slow withdrawal. --- Unfortunately, the departure of the Imperial military presence could not have come at a worse time. Almost a month following their departure, all contact with the colony was terminated. The nearest Imperial forces were unable to assist as they were not equipped for disaster response or planetary assault operations, in no small thanks due to the fact that Hybsia itself was intended as a military refueling station for the Imperial navy, thus they had yet to account for its loss to Weyland-Yutani. Furthermore, the corporation was also unable to dispatch a force in-time, knowing that the Imperial fleet would likely be able to muster a force faster than they could. Their fear of trusting the Empire was that if the Empire discovered their research compound, that it could turn into a diplomatic incident. Thus, the Empire, and begrudgingly the Corporation, were forced to turn to the USCMC for assistance, the Empire due to their treaty of help and friendship, and the corporation due to their hope they can influence the American’s to keep quiet. Thus the heavily damaged, but still operational, USS Almayer, which was close enough to respond in less than a week, received a remote signal as its engines slowly turned itself away from its destination to home, and instead towards Hybsia. As its interim Commander and staff were awoken days prior to its arrival, the crew were thus being prepared for an unexpected mission. Set on a course, ship and crew, towards their fate, and to the books of history for time immemorial.
