Right now it's a submodule, which is obnoxious for people building from source tarballs (i.e. anybody who wants to package Radiance.)
I suggest either either putting the code in a shared library as a dependency, or checking it straight in to the main repository.

Could we just make travis build tarballs then? I'm worried because I've been wondering if rtmidi should also move inside.

Well, rtmidi is available on Ubuntu and Arch, and is optional.
