Does the pics gets downloaded to phone memory?

Just wandering when we use this app (or just whatsapp web itself), does the pics gets downloaded or they are just shown to us temporarily and like stored in some catche memory or something.
I am asking this bcoz, one of the reason to use this app is that i dont want to get my gallery or phone memory used with all the pics that whatspp downlods. So its better this way,
But can someone(wid skills) can recover these files or photos from somwhere from our phone memory. Or once logout theres no trace of anything of our chat and pics.

the pics are stored in the webviews internal cache and removed if you delete the appdata or log out in the app. If you download them, they will be stored in your download directory permanently.
Pictures could be extracted if you have the tools. (But also anything on your phone can be extracted, if you have the proper tools ;) )
