help setting up subscriptions/websockets

Hi folks, I followed the docs and examples for setting up subscriptions using websockets but when I try using the apollo dev client extension on a subscription I get

  "message": "server must support graphql-ws or subscriptions-transport-ws protocol"
}

Did I miss a step?
