The external status LEDs could do a lot more. At the moment, the only status it gives is green blinking to indicate FPGA boot and a green PLL lock status. Link quality status could be red, for example, on the incoming Rx port.
And maybe instead of a hard blink a softer PWM-style blink could be used.

That is correct, it means the FPGA has booted and loaded a bitstream. It
doesn't relay status about the actual state of the cable itself, which
is admittedly a bit of a UX problem.
