Enhancement I think this would make Arctos even awesomer! Function-CodeTables Priority-Normal (Not urgent) Normal because this needs to get done but not immediately.

Describe what you're trying to do
I'm returning an object to a Federally Recognized Tribe (a NAGPRA-like transaction) for an unaccessioned item (UAMObs:EH:T2016.014) and I'd like to add a shipment but there is not an accurate shipment type to pick from. For now I'm adding "loan: return" but that's not quite accurate.

  • new term to the ctshipment_type: "transfer of custody"

  • documentation/definition (which matches the ctdisposition): Relocation of an object to another physical location outside the collection's facilities, in which there is a reasonable expectation of a formal transaction; in any case, there is no expectation of return but the collection deems it necessary to maintain its metadata. Transfer of custody is differentiated from a formal deaccession where an accession exists but its legal and physical status is no longer the responsibility of the collection. This is definitely not appropriate as a shipment type, that's just how this action was carried out (eg fedex or handed to that person).

I believe https://arctos.database.museum/info/ctDocumentation.cfm?table=ctloan_type#transfer_of_custody is appropriate, although the definition could potentially use some work ('institution' isn't meaningful or necessary, that's in the agent record - like identifiers!)

  • disposition = 'no longer in our possession'
  • "loan" type = why it's not in our possession, maybe even indicate who has/had it (legal/social/custodial stuff)
  • shipment type should explain how it moved (physical stuff)
