I've run into two users today who were having this issue, so decided to look into it. There's an old Github from 2018 in /gutenberg that hasn't moved, and it's a fairly common issue on .com, so I wanted to escalate here to see if there's anything that can be done.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open a word processor, and write your copy in that word processor, the most common being Microsoft Word.
  2. Alternatively, look at another source online, and find any content that has Headings/different formatting.
  3. Highlight, copy the content from that external source, and paste it onto a page.
  4. Publish the page.
  5. There will be a lot of hidden formatting/HTML that is brought over from that external source
  6. Previously, we had a Paste as Plain Text option available (it is currently only available in the Classic Block).

What I expected

Paste as Plain Text to still be an option in newer blocks, like the Paragraph Block

What happened instead

When users are pasting from an external source (like Word) to Paragraph Blocks, a lot of hidden formatting gets transferred over, and there's no way to prevent that, outside of using the Classic Editor, or Classic Block.

Browser / OS version

All.

Example from a user's site from earlier today:

Another user's site (I don't have a screenshot) came with:

<p class="has-custom-font" style="font-size:2px;line-height:1.1;font-family:Noto Sans">

Which was reducing font sizes to 2px.

Context / Source

A built in Paste as Plain Text option, like we used to have, would reduce confusion when pasting content from an external source, and lead to more usage of standard blocks, as opposed to the Classic Block, or reduce instances where users are using standard blocks, then have to insert a Classic Block in the middle of their content, for specific instances where pasting from an external source is needed.
