Wish for Avalonia.MobileUI #3726
Comments
Now we are making a cross-platform way of getting XAML content on the screen and getting user input to said content. It's the matter of the content if it's mobile-first or not. Before going "mobile first" we need to get properly working mobile backends. To get properly working mobile backends, we need several improvements in the core part of the framework. IME support is planned for this Summer, so one could expect a working iOS backend this Fall. |
Thank you for your feedback. The default UI library provided by Avalonia is too simple, poor and focus on desktop. I think we should give priority to provide bootstrap or iOS captino theme to attract developers. When choosing the cross platform development solution, if the conditions are similar, developers will choose the good-looking interface first. So Many developers have no ability to change the style of the control library, and they hope to have an out-of-box beautiful style library. Thanks for consideration, and thank very much for the hard work of Avalonia team! |
Have you checked community themes? The Citrus one is focusing on mobile-like UI |
Thank you for your answer. Citrus is very beatiful. This is not a functional issue, but a strategic issue for marketing. |
I know this is a stale issue so forgive me for stepping in:
As you know there are two main ways to organize projects for cross-platform app development:
Way number 1 is actually not ideal in several cases. It requires managing Nuget packages and apps separately for each platform head. It isn't a true 'write-once, run everywhere' project design. Xamarin required it for build and architecture reasons where it makes sense for them. Xamarin is simply a wrapper over native controls and you often end up having to jump into platform-specific code. Uno Platform follows this because they build directly off the Xamarin-tooling to build and package apps; however, they will be quick to acknowledge the downsides. Uno investigated for a long time the feasibility of actually moving to a single-project multi-platform solution. Way number 2 is actually the best approach for a true cross-platform app development. It streamlines the projects and directory structures which is actually a huge help as there is now a very high percentage of cross-platform code (much higher than Xamarin.Forms). Now, there is the issue of build and packaging for each platform separately. This is an issue that will need to be handled carefully. Ideally, Avalonia would abstract it away but I'm not sure how feasible that actually is. Note that the Uno Platform itself has integrated all platform code together and separates platform-specific code using partial classes, conditional compilation and .iOS.cs/.droid.cs/etc file name suffixes. The same approach can be used with Avalonia where any platform-specific code is required. Anyway, my vote is to NOT require separate projects for each platform. Integrating everything together is actually a better design in my opinion. |
Android, Todo.iOS, Todo.
Thank you very much for the hard work of Avalonia team! I'm glad to finally have a reliable and cross platform UI self-drawing framework library which is gradually mature. However, when I using avalonia, I feel that there are several core issues that I think need to pay attention to, and start to do as soon as possible to avoid detours:
(1) Adjust the solution structure. Split the single code project to several platform-seperated projects(such as Todo.Windows, Todo.Mac, Todo.android, Todo.iOS), just liking xamarin or cocos2dx. Special functions of each platform can be considered to use xamarin's class library or develop independently. And, each project can be directly compiled into exe, app, APK and other platform specific executable files. This is also one reason for that Qt is not promoted smoothly in the development of mobile platform. You can debug and test Qt app,, but there is still a lot of work to achieve deployment and release to iOS and android.
(2) Mobile first. Now we are making the old desktop program UI library. To be honest, it doesn't mean much. There is already a desktop control library similar to GTK. It's tiring and unattractive for developers to remake it again. At this stage, the controls provided by default are basically only used for desktop program style, which is too simple. In contrast, flutter provides two control styles of IOS and Android by default, which will attracts developers so much. Developers should focus on business logic instead of tossing over various controls. If you want to overtake in a corner, put down the desktop control library first and improve it slowly (consider building it by referring to the bootstrap style), and create a new avalonia.mobileui control library and give priority to the development. The library also gives priority to the implementation of IOS style, and must support the dark mode to reduce the basic workload of developers.
(3) Strive for Microsoft's support and try to be included in its cross platform development plan to speed up the development progress. To be honest, Avalonia is too slow to release. Flutter has been released to version 1.12, which is basically available for commercial use.
Competitor analysis
(1) Qt QML mobile development has not been popular. I think the main reasons are the same:
(2) The main reason for the rapid popularity of flutter is that it effectively realizes these two points:
As a lover of C#, I love Avalonia, and I sincerely hope that it will go fast and far.
