I looked at the code in question and it appears to be the same in both projects. I'm not sure why the code looks for a file in the current directory at all, but it should at least check to see that the file is indeed suitable to be used as an icon (but I'm not sure how one would do that). The most likely place that this would occur is running a program whose name is the same as its icon name, as is the case for solaar. See pwr-Solaar/Solaar#698 for the solaar bug report.
