"Failed to load the librdkafka native library" for Kafka Trigger function app running in container

When running a Kafka Trigger function app in a docker container using the image Node14 and Function v4 we face the error "Failed to load the librdkafka native library" on function startup. The error is resolved only when the LD_PATH_LIBRARY environment variable is explicitly populated. This behavior was expected to be fixed with the extension bundle version 2.8.3.
