For those of us that don't want to modify local repo contents, a fetch command would go nicely with pull to only update local views of remotes and not even attempt to do anything locally. Git status in a given repo will show "4 behind" or whatever after this has been run.

Actually, I already have [pull] ff = only, so what I really want is an alias for pull that is ff so I don't feel uncomfortable typing a command I literally never ever ever ever run. :-)

Still keen on this. Bonus points for "archive remote force pushes locally for before/after comparisons".
