Would it be possible to ingest legacy metadata served through a directory behind a http:// - URI such as auf http://wab.uib.no/cost-a32_xml/ ?

This would be pretty handy!

In theory this is possible but it's hard to generalize. If all such use cases are based on an Apache directory listing like in the example you provided, this will work. Otherwise it would require so customizable filtering functionality to distinguish links to be used from irrelevant links.

In any way, I'd rather concentrate on implementing the ZIP/XML functionality. A webpage can be crawled and zipped in like 10 lines of Perl.

I agree, ZIP/XML has priority!
