We originally talked about posts and post categories as a way to organize the gallery, but after some investigating I'm thinking pages might be more appropriate.

Under that assumption styles for https://wp.philipayers.com/sample-page/ should match up with https://www.philipayers.com/galleries/15-recent-paintings-lines-and-stripes-2017-21

Let me know if you have any thoughts

Working on this I realize pages alone won't cut it.

I was thinking we could use pages and the gallery block to link to attachment pages. Then, when necessary, the author could override the attachment page link to a separate page with more detailed images/text about the painting.

However, the gallery block doesn't allow custom links. There does seem to be an upstream patch that allows it, but it's not clear when it will be released (see WordPress/gutenberg#25940)

We could 1. See when this feature will be released and wait 2. Look for a plugin that works the way we want. 3. Build a custom block/plugin that does what we want, or 4. Continue investigating using posts instead of pages.

I think this is a plugin for adding custom links to gallery images: https://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-add-custom-links-to-gallery-images-in-wordpress/

Ok, the scope of features seems to be what we're looking for with nothing we don't need, and development seems to be active enough. Good find.

The only awkward part is that the links are bound to the images in the Media Library and not the gallery block. This means that an image in two different galleries cannot link to two different places unless the image was duplicated. This might not be an issue, but the client might want to have a say. I'll get back to you.

Client is ok with how pages and galleries work to move forward on this
