LifeCycle management for Data Products?

Hey all, how do you set up and define data product lifecycle management in your company?

A friend of mine recommended MD as a solution because it can be managed independently of specialised software solutions and can be easily rendered for business viewers. As this is only a theoretical solution, I would like to know how you implement this in practice.
