Representing ESMValTool in CMIP7 Data Request: Ocean & Sea Ice

Hi @ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-coreteam,

I'm going to be representing ESMValTool in the CMIP7 Ocean & Sea Ice Data request paper. I did use ESMValTool and CMIP6 quite extensively in AR6 and other works studying the ocean, but I'd really like to hear what others are doing. I just had a couple questions for the community:

• What did you use CMIP6 data for? What fields did you use?
• How happy are you with how the ocean data was treated in CMIP6?
• Were any essential datasets missing?
• Were any metadata or FX missing?
• Any other thoughts?

We developed recipe_easy_ipcc.yml where we used tos from all available CMIP6 models. The usual issues about incomplete or inconsistent metadata apply, mostly related to coordinates, see all the fixes for Tos and Omon in esmvalcore/cmor/_fixes/cmip6.

Several models are missing bounds on the grid and even our OceanFixGrid which tries to figure out the bounds, is not able to fix this. This makes conservative regridding impossible, see e.g. these plots (click the tab Regrid_Iris_Esmf_Area_Weighted).
