There's a bunch of good alternatives that we should explore, as our current build environment appears to not be actively maintained. There's a decent writeup here: reactjs/react.dev#5487 (comment)

Not sure what we'd want to migrate to, it's been long enough that I don't really know what the current landscape looks like.

possibly vite would be a reasonable replacement for react-scripts?
