MIRI will benefit the most from distortion correction due to its lower pixel res (0.11 arcseconds/pixel) and smaller sub-array aperture for slitless (MIRI SLITLESS PRISM).

Distortion correct can fix some relatively large potential offsets of ~4 pixels (priv. comm. DLaw). Use MIRICOORD:

https://github.com/STScI-MIRI/miricoord

To-do:

  • MIRICOORD distortion correction
  • Fine-tune trace position using throughput documentation (where is throughput the highest? that would be np.max(trace), and then do dy, dx accordingly).

I will take a look at this but plan to derive an empirical distortion correction using on-sky obs of MIRI LRS. This is what I did for NIRISS SOSS mode and it works like a charm.
