McCAD-Library provides this functionality by means of intermediate STEP files.
This methodology may be potentially applied depending on the inner mechanics of splitting that currently relies on FreeCAD.
Potentially intermediate object persistence and further introspection may provide this functionality in a Pythonic way.

I think my latest PR #189 helps with this. While it does not totally fix the issue it is a step in that direction as it allows users to call decompose in isolation
