When are task distance and speed section distance the same? When are they different? Do control zones before the start of the speed section and after the end of the speed section change task distance? Do they change the calculation of flown distance? In the task distance section, what is the "start point" for task distance?

For ground start, a cylinder control zone, centred around the launch point, is required. Let's call this the launch cylinder. Having a launch cylinder is common practice for air start too although having one is not required by the rules. In the section on task distance I take it that the start point is the centre of the launch cylinder.

Disregarding goal lines, if goal is a cylinder and this cylinder is also the end of the speed section and if the speed section distance is a measure of optimised distance from cylinder centre to cylinder centre then the task and the speed section will have the same distance if the start cylinder is the first control zone. The distances will match as well when there is a launch cylinder before the start cylinder and both share the same centre. If their centres are offset then the speed section could be shorter or longer than the task. The situation would get more complex if there were multiple control zones before the start.

If task and speed section distance can vary then the "still to fly" distance should be what's left of the task and not what's left of the speed section.
