We have received feedback that some users are confused about what page they are on and what they can do there.

Instances that we have heard include creating a dataset flow (via Mercè – May 9, 2017) and in a usability test session (user testing Dec 2016: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mNNRqRqIW92LXock332sIA-uXh-2agOpoyLLLKwXUA0/edit).

Clarifying/cleaning up the top area of main page templates would help, as would adding some instructional/introductory text to the top of some pages.

See mockup for an example of how the "Create Dataset" page could be clearer.

Update:

This applies to the Add Dataset, Add Dataverse, Edit Terms, and Edit Metadata page types for now. Other page types are TBD. Instructional text for popups is in progress.

  • No breadcrumb display for the active page
  • Dismissable info alert at the top of the page with brief contextual info text (wording example in the image above) that does not repeat the page name

@TaniaSchlatter this should also be applied to the "Dataverse collection" creation page (along with making sure everything is trademark appropriate). The little "?" mark also needs trademark updates, and describing anything as a "dataverse" isn't helpful, FYI see my screen shot of how unhelpful that text is, along with users not understanding what "HOST Dataverse" means

To focus on the most important features and bugs, we are closing issues created before 2020 (version 5.0) that are not new feature requests with the label 'Type: Feature'.

If you created this issue and you feel the team should revisit this decision, please reopen the issue and leave a comment.
