D435i accelero not working #2965

Issue Description

I just tried my new D435i, but I when I enable the motion sensor from the realsense viewer, it gives me errors. The gyro and the camera sensors seem to work, but the accelero times out. Tried rebooting and the lot, but no progress...

Any ideas? Should I send it back for a replacement?

Do you have a windows machine to compare to?
This can be unit-flaw, but we need to rule out issues with HID-IIO Linux driver.
Did you install librealsense via apt-get, including librealsense-dkms package?

OK, connected it to a Windows pc... That works! So something with the HID-IIO Linux driver, apparently. No idea how to proceed though, any tips?

@ev-mp do you have recommended troubleshooting steps for HID kernel modules?
I'd suggest checking the status of hid_sensor_accel_3d using modinfo hid_sensor_accel_3d; reinstalling librealsense dpkg and (maybe already done) restarting the PC.
Also, please share dmesg log when connecting the camera and when starting streaming.

Yes, tried rebooting and apt removing and re installing librealsense dkms stuff... Didn't work.

Hello @kevindehecker, I'm trying to reproduce the issue with 4.13.-043, so far with no success.
I also noted that dmesg log you posted is full of HW errors with uvcvideo, which may indicate that there is a broader HW-related issue.
Therefore I ask you perform the following:

  1. Verify that the accel's selected format is MOTION_XYZ32F.
  2. Run rs-capture demo to confirm the absence of accel readings.
  3. Switch USB port/External USB hub on the linux PC
  4. Record and publish hid debug with 30-40 messages with Accel&Gyro configuration enabled:

@kevindehecker , the log confirm that no Accel data is transmitted.
Please rerun the realsense-viewer with IMU preset and collect D435i FW logs by running rs-fw-logger > fw.log (in a new console window).

Use these lines right after you enable the Accel streaming using realsense-viewer.

@kevindehecker , we've managed to reproduce it with a NUC running Ubuntu 16 with kernel 4.4.0-138.
Then it was resolved by reinstalling the kernel:

sudo apt install --reinstall linux-image-4.13.0-43-generic linux-image-extra-4.13.0-43-generic linux-headers-4.13.0-43 linux-headers-4.13.0-43-generic

Please run and update. You can also remove librealsense2-dkms package before trying, but that's optional.

@ev-mp no such luck for me. Gave it a good couple of reinstalls, reboots, and the likes.... but no.

However, I also tried with 4.10.1-041001-generic which I still had installed coincidentally. With this both the accel and the gyro work nicely! Of course, there are reasons for me using 4.13.0-43-generic as it's the only one I know that solves a couple of problems specific to my hardware under Ubuntu 16.

I'm now thinking of upgrading to 18 though, unless you think it's worth your time to solve this problem?

@kevindehecker, I have managed to solve that issue by updating manually the Accel trigger index:
echo accel_3d-dev0 > /sys/bus/iio/devices/iio:device0/trigger/current_trigger

@RealSense-Customer-Engineering @RealSenseCustomerSupport Had this same issue on 16.04 kernel 4.15.0-43-generic on a Dell Precision 7510 (i7-6920HQ), was temporarily solved with @icarpis solution. However, has to be rerun every time the camera is connected and before running the relasense-viewer. If not run it results in the error:

When I run echo accel_3d-dev0 > /sys/bus/iio/devices/iio:device0/trigger/current_trigger after plugging in the camera but before running realsense-viewer, I get this in the terminal after I run the viewer:

Below are the settings being used when that is run (just the defaults). Would be nice to know why it is still getting errors.
Stereo - 1280x720, 30 FPS, Z16
RGB - 1280x720, 30 FPS, RGB8
Accel - MOTION_XYZ32F, 63 FPS
Gyro - MOTION_XYZ32F, 200 FPS
