This is a meta issue to track other issues related to accessibility. Enabling Islandora to be used by all is a major goal of the project and part of Islandora 8 Roadmap priorities. In addition, most jurisdictions in Canada, US and EU mandate that web applications meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA standards or equivalent standards.

While Drupal 8 provides good base accessibility support, additional modules and features provided by Islandora 8 need to support accessibility as well.

  • understanding the needs, standards and issues related to web accessibility
  • evaluating and testing for accessibility in Islandora 8
  • incorporating accessibility needs and concerns in the design, development and testing workflow

It would be good to be able to automatically propagate the alt text on Original File to Service File and Thumbnail derivatives.

WAVE Web Accessibility Tool - WebAIM is a good tool to evaluate accessibility. It has a FF and Chrome plugin as well as a web UI: http://wave.webaim.org/report#/future.islandora.ca.

Another good tool is ChromeVox to highlight tab ordering. Although it is a screen reader, it is more useful to test tab ordering.

Came across this post in my news feed today, I thought I'd drop it here since it looks like it has a lot of good, practical info: https://evolvingweb.ca/blog/how-test-your-drupal-sites-accessibility .
