JabRef version

5.3 (latest release)

Operating system

mac OS

Details on version and operating system

?

Checked with the latest development build

  • I made a backup of my libraries before testing the latest development version.
  • I have tested the latest development version and the problem persists

Steps to reproduce the behaviour

Students of mine, who are using macOS, experienced a problem when they add a book entry: (at least) the Pages and Pagetotal fields are not displayed. No such an issue on my Linux box.

(Sorry, I had to lie in order to fill this issue: I didn't check the latest dev versions since I noticed this trouble this afternoon during the (LaTeX) course but I won't see these students anymore.)

Hi,
the fields depend on the library mode if you use bibtex or biblatex. I did a quick check. Pages and Pagetotal are only crated in biblatex mode.

You can check the library mode: Library -> Library properties -> Library mode
You can also set a default library mode in the Preferences.

The semantics of pages is the number of pages in a book. Meaning a kind of "length". I wonder why this would be important to enter. 😇

From Tame the beast:

JabRef offers to enter the "pages" field in the BibTeX source tab (until we "finish" the new entry editor concept - see #6856).

BibLaTeX:

@dbitouze Until now, JabRef was very picky in standard conformance and tries to be as close to the standard as possible. We think, this is confusing and we will add pages to our config (org.jabref.model.entry.BibEntryType).

Note that one can modify a bst to output the page numbers at @book: https://tex.stackexchange.com/q/114773/9075
