If I update the retail client, will I also have to update the LandSandBoat server or risk problems?

Or can I carry on updating and playing on the retail server and leave LandSandBoat server alone on it's current version??

I would prefer to keep playing on the retail server while also being able to play on my own LSB server. But will I have to update my LSB server whenever I update on retail to avoid problems with my LSB server???

I guess I'm also asking how is the retail client associated with LSB, too.

Yes the client and server versions should match. When it comes to stuff like text, the server is just sending an ID and the client prints the text with that ID, but those can shift around during updates. Take the Feb update for example #7064. In Abyssea Altepa text ID 7332 was <name>'s attack staggers the fiend! but in Feb that was changed to Visitant Light Intensity Pearlescent: <number> / Ebon: <number> Golden: <number> / Silvery: <number>. So if your server is pre-Feb update but your client is post, your client would print the light intensity message instead of the intended stagger message. Cutscenes, NPCs, and mobs occasionally shift around too, and there have been times (like when the mentor system was overhauled) where even opening certain menus will crash the client. If you're not making a lot of changes to the server, the update process is pretty quick and painless, though there may be a little time before the update is merged, depending on how busy people are. I think Ashita has a sandbox plugin that lets you launch different versions of the game but I can't really comment on how that works since I usually just play one or the other.
