Blur function stopped working, even with all options activated. I emptied cache, disabled and enabled the extension. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it no longer blurs conversations, photos, names and text boxes. Option to blur when idle is not active. Even activating it, it deactivates itself again. Print attached.

What version of WhatsApp Web are you using?

Here's an example of mine: Version 2.3000.1016106561, and it's working perfectly:

This will help us narrow down the issue.

No need to update the version, we want the extension to work on older versions too.

@gabrielaz318 @deivissonpp

I'm not able to simulate this error, I'll try to emulate it on other notebooks I have here.

I suspect that commit #83 may have caused the error.

thank you all for addresing the issue and helping with the information!

I'm still trying to identify the issue. I tested the extension on version 3.3.0 across three different notebooks, and everything worked fine on all of them.

HP 256 G8

  • Windows 11, version 23H2
  • WhatsApp Web Version 2.3000.1016111442
  • Chrome Version 127.0.6533.120 (64-bit)

Dell Inspiron 15 3530

  • Windows 11, 23H2
  • WhatsApp Version 2.3000.1016111442
  • Chrome Version 128.0.6613.114 (64-bit)

Acer Nitro AN515-43

  • Windows 11, version 23H2
  • WhatsApp Version 2.3000.1016111442
  • Chrome Version 127.0.6533.100 (64-bit)

I'll keep looking into this.

How did I solve it?

• I disabled all extensions;
• I only left the Privacy Extension for WhatsApp Web active;
• I went back to the WhatsApp Web tab and pressed CRTL+SHIFT+R;
• WhatsApp Web continued without blurring;
• I uninstalled and reinstalled the Privacy Extension for WhatsApp Web;
• I went back to the WhatsApp Web tab and everything was blurry. Success!

captura1

I re-enabled each of the extensions, the error did not repeat itself and WhatsApp Web remains blurred.

captura3

And now WhatsApp Web is at version 2.3000.1016111442.

captura2

I can't say if the cause of the problem was other extensions, a problem with Chrome or the version of WhatsApp Web.

Anyway, thanks for your attention!

It's late but I actually face the same issue, extension not working after it has been updated.
Only pressing CTRL + Shift + R on whatsapp not working too. With the same error in console log. Maybe this case will still happening when we update to new version.

Simple steps:

  1. Uninstall / Remove extension.
  2. Press CTRL + Shift + R on Whatsapp Web tab.
  3. Install / Add extension.
  4. Press CTRL + Shift + R on Whatsapp Web tab.
  5. Deactivate then activate extension.

No need to disable other extension for me

If this doesn't work for you, try to logout then login your whatsapp account!

Thanks for your detailed solution too @fabianodellano

@aryomuzakki , I think users who haven't refreshed WhatsApp Web might still be seeing elements in their DOM with role="row" instead of role="listitem". I think this is the only recent change on the code that wasn't related to translations and could explain the issue. #83

owh right, should have also left the old code too for people who haven't update whatsapp.

But it's actually a different problem, because in this issue nothing is blurring, this case was happen before too.

@aryomuzakki

Yes, I even wish I had made my comment earlier, but because I had the same thought as you I didn't. Since the update mainly targeted names/group names and profile pictures, it's possible that the error in the console related to the content script is causing the entire extension to stop working, rather than just affecting specific parts (just a guess).

I agree that for future DOM updates on WhatsApp Web, we should keep the old code as well to ensure better backward compatibility.

@aryomuzakki, @LukasLen

I posted a step-by-step solution in Portuguese on the Chrome Web Store, and it has already received 18 positive reviews. I suggest you guys also comment in your language or in English as a review (since most people don't use the support tab on the Chrome Web Store). This way, we can help as many people as possible.

Simple steps:

  1. Uninstall/Remove the extension.
  2. Press CTRL + Shift + R on the WhatsApp Web tab.
  3. Install/Add the extension.
  4. Press CTRL + Shift + R again.
  5. Deactivate, then activate the extension.

Thanks for all replies - I think I have found the problem and created a PR with the fix.
I guess this was due to the change in the settings structure that caused the null error.
