Write unit tests using pytest

A framework for automatic testing has been implemented using Github workflows and pytest. We have written a few basic tests and defined some pytest fixtures, but this is totally incomplete. Need to write unit tests for the key ThermoPot methods. We could also write end-to-end tests for common code paths using Pytest.
