Taking guidance from https://docs.python.org/3/howto/pyporting.html, look at Python 3 supporting using https://github.com/python-modernize/python-modernize.

Paves the way for Python 3 (#339). Should fix #371.

Modernize creates all sorts of hellish problems for pathlib on Python 2. Also for the perennially brittle PyInstaller.
