The Problem

It would be nice if

  • Users could reorder spaces in the sidebar (e.g. by dragging and dropping them, like in Discord)
  • After using Element, users could log in to Nheko and see the spaces in the side bar in the same order as they were in Element

The Solution

Element seems to use MSC3230 for room order.

TL;DR: the space room has this room account data:

{
  "type": "org.matrix.msc3230.space_order",
  "content": {
    "order": "/"
  }
}

order is an arbitrary string; the lexicographical ordering of these strings of top-level spaces dictates the order.
