The DPDK based PMD requires VFIO (IOMMU) and huge pages to run, but it also supports non-root run, making it easy to deploy within Docker/Kubernetes environments.
If you have already enabled IOMMU, you can skip this step. To check if IOMMU is enabled, please verify if there are any IOMMU groups listed under the "/sys/kernel/iommu_groups/" directory. If no groups are found, it indicates that IOMMU is not enabled.

The steps to enable IOMMU in your BIOS/UEFI may vary depending on the manufacturer and model of your motherboard. Here are general steps that should guide you:

Restart your computer. During the boot process, you'll need to press a specific key to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup. This key varies depending on your system's manufacturer. It's often one of the function keys (like F2, F10, F12), the ESC key, or the DEL key.

Navigate to the advanced settings. Once you're in the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, look for a section with a name like "Advanced", "Advanced Options", or "Advanced Settings".

After enabling IOMMU in the BIOS, you need to enable it in your operating system as well.

Some operating systems, including CentOS stream and RHEL 9, has a small limit to RLIMIT_MEMLOCK (amount of pinned pages the process is allowed to have) which will cause DMA remapping fail during the running, please edit /etc/security/limits.conf, append below two lines at the end of file, change to the username currently login.

DPDK utilizes the Linux kernel's VFIO module to enable direct NIC hardware access from user space with the assistance of an IOMMU (Input/Output Memory Management Unit).
To use DPDK's Poll Mode Drivers (PMDs), NICs must be bound to the vfio-pci
driver. Before manipulating VFIO devices, it's necessary to configure user permissions and system rules to allow the current user to access VFIO devices.
This section guides you through creating a dedicated group, granting the appropriate permissions, and setting up udev rules to maintain these settings across system reboots and devices re-creations.
Add a new group named vfio
with GID 2110
to control the VFIO devices, and add your current user to that group. If GID 2110
is in use, consider using a different one.

For other Network Interface Cards (NICs), please verify if your NIC is supported by DPDK by referring to the following link: https://doc.dpdk.org/guides/nics/. If it is, follow the guide provided there for further instructions.
If your NIC is not supported by DPDK's native Poll Mode Driver (PMD), MTL provides an alternative in the form of kernel socket-based transport support. This enables an MTL application to send and receive UDP packets via the Kernel. Please refer to kernel tx config and kernel rx config for how to config the kernel transport in json config. However, it's important to note that this is an experimental feature intended solely for trial usage. Consequently, its performance and pacing accuracy may be limited.

For example, if you want to enable 2048 2M huge pages, which would total to 4GB of memory, you can follow the step below:

The number is dependent on the workloads you wish to execute. Consider increasing the value if memory allocation failures occur during runtime.
Please note that the input YUV source file for the sample application is in the RFC4175 YUV422BE10 (big-endian 10-bit) pixel group format, which is defined in the ST2110 specification. This project includes a simple tool to convert the format from YUV422 planar 10-bit little-endian format.

The Precision Time Protocol (PTP) facilitates global timing accuracy in the microsecond range for all essences. Typically, a PTP grandmaster is deployed within the network, and clients synchronize with it using tools like ptp4l. This library includes its own PTP implementation, and a sample application offers the option to enable it. Please refer to section 7.1.2 for instructions on how to enable it.
By default, the built-in PTP feature is disabled, and the PTP clock relies on the system time source of the user application (clock_gettime). However, if the built-in PTP is enabled, the internal NIC time will be selected as the PTP source.
Firstly run ptp4l to sync the PHC time with grandmaster, customize the interface as your setup.

Then run phc2sys to sync the PHC time to system time, please make sure NTP service is disabled as it has conflict with phc2sys.

This project includes built-in support for the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) protocol, which is also based on the hardware Network Interface Card (NIC) timesync feature. This combination allows for achieving a PTP time clock source with an accuracy of approximately 30ns.
To enable this feature in the RxTxApp sample application, use the "--ptp" argument. The control for the built-in PTP feature is the "MTL_FLAG_PTP_ENABLE" flag in the "mtl_init_params" structure.
Note: Currently, the VF (Virtual Function) does not support the hardware timesync feature. Therefore, for VF deployment, the timestamp of the transmitted (TX) and received (RX) packets is read from the CPU TSC (TimeStamp Counter) instead. In this case, it is not possible to obtain a stable delta in the PTP adjustment, and the maximum accuracy achieved will be up to 1us.
You need to repeat below steps to create Virtual Functions (VF), bind the VF to DPDK PMD, and set up the hugepages configuration again since it's lost after reboot.

And, sometimes after a system reboot, it is possible for the operating system to update to a new kernel version. In such cases, it is important to remember to rebuild the NIC driver to ensure compatibility with the new kernel version.
When running as non-root user, there may be some additional resource limits that are imposed by the system.
RLIMIT_MEMLOCK (amount of pinned pages the process is allowed to have), if you see below error at start up, it's likely caused by too small RLIMIT_MEMLOCK settings.

Please increase the value of RLIMIT_MEMLOCK, below is a example to enable unlimited RLIMIT_MEMLOCK.
# Edit /etc/security/limits.conf, append below two lines at the end of file, change <USER> to the username currently login.
<USER> hard memlock unlimited
<USER> soft memlock unlimited
sudo reboot
After reboot, double check the limit is disabled.
ulimit -a | grep "max locked memory"
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited
The following error indicates that the port driver is not configured to DPDK PMD mode. Please run nicctl.sh to configure it:

The VFIO driver can run without the IOMMU feature, enable it with below command to bypass IOMMU. As the name suggests, enable_unsafe_noiommu_mode
is considered unsafe, and should only be used if you understand the risks.
sudo bash -c 'echo 1 > /sys/module/vfio/parameters/enable_unsafe_noiommu_mode'
If you get below similar message when runing the RxTxApp, it's likely a ld library path problem.

Try to find the path of this so and append it to LD_LIBRARY_PATH
.
