Overlapping x-axis labels, most frequently when format is YYYY-MM-DD.

Possible fix for most cases: use the matplotlib DateFormatter to remove %Y when the date range is a year or less.

import matplotlib.dates as mdates
axes.xaxis.set_major_formatter(mdates.DateFormatter('%m-%d'))
