While it can be useful to tell the street ref number, it would be very helpful to also tell the street names; sometimes L33, B2, B1 are more helpful (especially the "B" numbers) but often it also helps to have the plain street name.

See http://osrm.at/1V2 That generates the following [annotations in brakes are added by me]:

Head southeast onto L 33 [Torstraße, then Mollstraße]
0.67 km

Turn sharp right onto B 2 [nearly 90 degree turn into Otto-Braun-Straße]
0.15 km

Continue onto B2 [Keep right on Otto-Braun-Straße (in order reach the tunnel); otherwise: That's the same street name and ref= thus, there is no need to repeat the name]
24 m

Continue onto B 2 [still on Otto-Braun-Straße / B2]
0.16 km

Continue onto Tunnel Alexanderplatz [that's still B2, though the ref= was missing]
0.30 km

Continue onto B 1 [and that's Grunerstraße]
0.48 km

You have reached your destination

As per #482, perhaps support relations here too: "Turn sharp right onto National Cycle Network route 5", etc.

Drifting off into wishlist territory here, but it would be awesome if we could write lua plugins which took the tags/relations for a given way and returned a name.

with the route branch, it's easy to use route names if you like, or combine them with way name, fx "Turn left ont West Street (National Cycle Route 5)".
